In considering the relationships between cosmology, history, and theology, let us go back in our thinking to the Middle Ages, particularly to the late medieval period, when the unity of all knowledge was still strongly defended, and the nature and origins of that unity hotly debated. Let us limit our focus to England, to the University of Oxford, and to the fourteenth century in particular. There the most forceful proponent of the unity of cosmology, history, and theology, and of the ability of man to perceive eternal truths concerning them, was the philosophical realist, John Wyclyf (1320–1384).
