La double intention de l’article est de reconstituer l’argumentation qui établit le fondement anthropologique de l’esthétique schillérienne et d’en montrer les implications pour la critique de la métaphysique. L’union de la raison et de la sensibilité est la destination de l’homme. Pour pouvoir au moins se rapprocher de cet idéal divin, l’homme a besoin du Beau : le Beau comme « forme vivante » n’est rien d’autre que la perfection devenue perceptible de l’homme. Avec cette définition anthropologique de la beauté, Schiller renonce à fonder celle-ci métaphysiquement dans un ordre du monde divin. Mais la théorie du souverain bien elle aussi, réduite par la critique à être la condition de la raison et de la sensibilité dans le champ de la pratique, est privée de sa justification.
