As a result, where as emptiness used to be relegated to the borders, now the · aim is paradoxically to grant it a necessity within the same borders. There, however, is the rub for the requirement of completeness and consistency of linguistic description: can gaps be set up as a natural class? Can language itself account for the rifts it encompasses?
